Cormorant Poses for Photoshoot

Many evenings I pack my camera into a backpack, mount my bicycle and head to a nearby pond in search of birds. On a good day, I might find a tri-colored heron or a wood stork. On a great day, a roseate spoonbill might pay a visit.

I am often disappointed when the only bird in residence is a cormorant. Our area has many of them. Unlike so many of their friends, cormorants lack color and drama. And because there are so many of them, it is sometimes easy to ignore them.

One evening last week I encountered a cormorant that prompted me to rethink my cavalier attitude. This cormorant was special — not in appearance but in effort. More about that later.
