Why is Immigration so Contentious?

In America and in other parts of the world Immigration is a hot button issue. Conservatives generally want closed borders with more restrictions on who can get in; while liberals are more open to an easier process to gain entry into a the country. Of course, everyone is against illegal immigration. Yet, both sides disagree on how to deal with illegal immigrants once they’ve come into the country. This is, and has been, a challenging discussion that has gone on for years with little resolve. It will be a popular talking point in the 2024 election, and is worth gaining a better understanding of the subject.

To start, a bit of recent history may help give us some context. While unauthorized immigrant numbers are on the rise at 10.5 million per year, they are below the recent peak of 12.2 million in 2007. A high number, but since the great financial crisis unauthorized immigration has not recovered to the same level. A reason for that may be that when the great financial crisis materialized, hispanic immigration greatly declined. However, the Asian immigrant population did not.
