Conservation Meets Identity: Risk Management for the Soul

Following their identity, nature conservationists rarely consider their actions particularly risky. Far from it — they view their endeavours as quantum leaps toward a greener status quo, a blissful outlook to a better life. This perspective often rubs up against the more cautious outlook of various stakeholders, including corporate giants wary of environmental interventions.

Dyed-in-the-wool nature conservationists tend to dismiss such reservations as right-wing, neocon obstructions to cement the corporations’ explorative business model–and thus fall victim to their own identity, including the sacred cow of capitalism to feed greedy shareholders come hell or high waters–often on the expense of formerly intact, healthy environments. Privatising profits and socialising losses deepen the existing divide between the often underpaid conservationists and the private sector.
