Persistent ignorance of the intersex community of Pakistan.
<p><strong>Intersex people make up 1.7 of the world’s population. Despite this large number, the intersex community continues to be a subject of discrimination and violence. It has been reported that for many years, doctors around the globe have routinely operated on intersex people’s genitalia without their consent in order to make their health anatomy appear more ‘normal’. Doctors have been trying to fix a thing that is not broken. There are innumerable health as well as ethical implications of such procedures. Doctors in New Zealand believe that it is ‘their job to finish off what nature failed to do’.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Pakistan is home to one and a half million intersex individuals. It is a well-established fact that being intersex has nothing to do with one’s sexuality but is simply how a person has been born. Yet, this community faces humiliation and exclusion at the hands of society as well as their families. Losing ties with their families, intersex individuals continue being an easy target for abuse.</strong></p>
