How Climate Change and Child Marriage Unfortunately Go Hand in Hand

Because while climate change is undoubtedly a collective, planet-threatening issue, its consequences don’t affect everyone the same way. It’s not gender, race or social class neutral. When it comes to gender, study after study shows that it’s women and girls who are disproportionately affected by the negative impacts of extreme weather events. After all, it’s women’s livelihoods that are more dependent on natural resources threatened by it, and it’s women who make up <a href="https://www.ilo.org/global/about-the-ilo/newsroom/news/WCMS_008066" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">nearly 70% of the world’s poor.</a> And it’s precisely all those gendered issues already existing in society that get turned up a notch or five as a result — from sexual and domestic violence to sex trafficking.
