Athens – a city of challenges

What’s a holiday without a transport strike? Welcome to Athens, the so-called birthplace of Western civilisation – and this week, the home to strikes by all and sundry, including air traffic controllers, public transport drivers, teachers and garbologists. Fortunately, Alexis, our BnB host, had already forewarned us and provided the information we needed to get to our accommodation.

Although a number of planes were cancelled ours made it through although we had to wait on the tarmac for a bus to come to collect us. Once through customs, we had to find a bus to take us into the heart of Athens. The Metro train, the most used and most efficient way, which runs directly from the airport was not operating so a bus or taxi were the only options.
