Cillian Murphy Should’ve Won an Oscar for His Queer Movie Role

Congratulations to Cillian Murphy for winning the 2023 Best Actor Oscar for Oppenheimer, a film I decided not to see on political grounds. I would much rather have seen Murphy get the trophy for his performance in Breakfast on Pluto (2005), in which he played a beguiling gender-nonconforming ingénue who gets caught up in the “Irish Troubles.”

Breakfast on Pluto, now streaming on Prime and Roku, features a cast of then better-known actors Liam Neeson, Stephen Rea, and Brendan Gleeson. But Murphy steals the show as Kitten, who knows who she is from an early age and remains less comfortable in her male persona, then gets a kick out of getting her elders’ knickers in a twist, as it were. Murphy obviously dove headfirst into this demanding role.
