Your Black Lives Matter Sign Won’t Save Your Church From Racism

I don’t know how many times I have seen a predominantly White congregation with a “Black Lives Matter” sign (and probably a Pride flag) out on the lawn. Most of the time, I shake my head in disappointment because I know the drill. Spoiler alert: probably zero black or queer folks go there.

In the United States, it seems that the majority of the churches that are loud about being anti-racist and queer-loving also seem to be some of the most stuck-in-their-ways when it comes to white, Eurocentric worship expressions.

I’d bet cold hard cash that if you walk into the door of the majority of the so-called “anti-racist” churches, you’ll find an older, predominantly white congregation worshiping in its humdrum, “traditional” way. It might even be branded as “liturgical” or “rooted in church history” or “traditionally non-traditional” when in reality it is probably just very, very white.
