Meet The Real Birds Of ‘The Twelve Days Of Christmas’ Fame

<p>Since today is the fifth (or the sixth) day of Christmas, I thought I&rsquo;d share the real species identities of all the birds mentioned in the famous English Christmas carol, &ldquo;The Twelve Days of Christmas&rdquo; , as identified by Pamela Rasmussen, an integrative biologist at&nbsp;<a href="https://msu.edu/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Michigan State University</a>, and coordinator of MSU&rsquo;s crowd-sourced global bird sounds website,&nbsp;<a href="http://avocet.zoology.msu.edu/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">AVoCet</a>.</p> <p>&ldquo;Like most people in the US, I grew up knowing the words to this carol and even (shudder) singing them occasionally (singing is not a strong point of mine), but never really thought about what they meant, how the carol originated, or what birds were involved&rdquo;, says Dr Rasmussen in email.
