Casuarina Trees, My Favorites

Ten years later when I was teaching science to high school students at Jakarta International School, my ecology students and the geology students did a field trip to Anak Krakatau, a small island around the Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Straits between the Indonesian Islands of Java and Sumatra. When Krakatau erupted in 1883 over 70% of the island collapsed into the caldera of the volcano. Anak means “child” in Malay, so Anak Krakatau is the island that is forming again around the volcano.

When the students stepped out of the boats into the water along the beach of the island, they discovered that the water and sand under the water was warm, not just sun-warmed, but really warm. Wow. They actually were on the edge of an active volcano.
