What happened to the Carthaginians after the fall of Carthage?
<p>In 146 BC, the Roman army stormed and completely destroyed the huge seaside metropolis of Carthage. Most of the city’s inhabitants perished, and the survivors were enslaved. After nothing was left to plunder in the city, the Romans withdrew their troops and set fire to what remained of Carthage. The fires lasted another 17 days, the ashes were sown with salt (so that no plants would grow in this place) and ritually cursed by the Roman Senate. The former empire’s territory became the Roman province of Africa with its capital in Utica — a city that immediately sided with the Romans upon their landing.</p>
