Cannabis in India — From Scripture to Stoners

It is said that Cannabis has been used in India for at least 4.000 years. The Hindu text Atharva Veda (written around 3.500 years ago) mentions Cannabis as one of the five sacred plants.

It is also speculated that Cannabis may be the ingredient used for the preparation of Soma, a mysterious drink at the center of attention in the Rig Veda, the oldest Hindu scripture. Other candidates include the Amanita Muscaria mushroom as well as psilocybin (magic) mushrooms.

Today, Cannabis still plays a big part in the everyday life of many Indians. It is consumed not only in a religious, ceremonial context by wandering monks and devotees, but also for recreational purposes by farmers, young city-people and foreign travellers.

Learn More
