Myth of 10% Brain Use

This myth assumes that humans only use less than 10% of their intelligence and claims that there is still potential to be generated from the remaining 90%. It started with the misinterpretation of Pierre Flourens’ work in the 1800s by William James. In 1908, William James said: “We use only a fraction of our possible mental and physical resources” (from The Energies of Men, p. 12). Also corroborated by Karl Lashley. Lashley removed large areas of the cerebral cortex in rats and found that these animals could still relearn certain tasks. We now know that damage to even small areas of the human brain can have devastating effects on human behavior. This is one of the reasons why neurosurgeons must carefully map the brain before removing brain tissue during surgery for epilepsy or tumors in order to ensure that important areas of the brain are not damaged.
