Will Bodily Autonomy Become the New Core Theme of YA Fantasy?

Inthe universe of The Quelling, when young people come of age, they must voluntarily report to a processing center where they surrender control of their bodies. Creatures known as the Rheman take control for a period of time. For the owner of the body, the experience is like going under the influence of anesthesia.

In one chapter, Kyjta, the book’s protagonist, describes the trauma of this experience. Kyjta doesn’t have anyone in her life she truly trusts, so she must go to the center without any support. When her body is returned, the angle of the sun tells her time has passed, but she doesn’t remember anything. It takes her a moment to reorient herself, and though her body is intact, she feels as if she has been violated.
