No, Trump Can’t End Birthright Citizenship

Earlier this year, Donald Trump promised that if he is elected president in 2024, one of his first acts will be to eliminate “birthright citizenship.” For those of you not steeped in debates over U.S. immigration law, birthright citizenship refers to the fact that people born on U.S. soil automatically acquire U.S. citizenship, regardless of the citizenship or immigration status of their parents.

In this essay, I want to first explain why Trump can’t simply end birthright citizenship with the stroke of a pen. But I also want to address the way Trump talks about this issue in particular, and immigration generally. Because while it’s normal to have a rational debate about immigration law, Trump’s rhetoric isn’t normal at all. It echoes the very worst language of history’s most notorious despots and ethnic cleansers.
