Preventing Bike Deaths

Hallelujah! It’s about time somebody said something about the manner in which bicyclists ride in the Big Apple. I’m a native New Yorker who’s been riding the streets of the city daily for over 30 years. And the changes I’ve seen over the decades are considerable.

Back in the early ‘90’s, the vast majority of bike riders were messengers ferrying documents back and forth for corporate clients who hadn’t yet come to enjoy the benefits of email. Professional riders zipped in and out of traffic with reckless abandon as there were no bike lanes at the time. But they knew how to ride — and weren’t aided by electricity that could propel them at breakneck speeds while they smoked a cigarette. They were a hearty crew proud of their fitness and occupation.
