Bernie Sanders Won the Debate

Bernie won. I do not mean he won the election; I mean Bernie won the debate. Or, on a more sophisticated level, the neoliberal consensus that many in the Democratic Party were part of is now a zombie aimlessly walking through the mall hungry for brains, and the majority of the Democratic members of Congress know it.

The claim above needs a bit of context. Bernie’s ideas gained traction for reasons other than Bernie’s clarity and authenticity. The beating neoliberalism took during the Great Recession as well as growing wealth and income inequality that led to middle-class decline since the rise of the neoliberal consensus in the late 1970s, is the underlying cause. No dominant ideology can long survive delegitimization when its central ideas become unglued from reality.
