<p>Unbeknownst to me, the day I planned to travel from Paris to Berlin, there were huge rail strikes throughout Germany. Many trains were canceled, and the man in the information center at the Cologne station gave me an incredulous look when I said I was trying to get to Berlin; but he was an enormous help nonetheless, and with some transfers, I was on my way to Germany&rsquo;s capital city.</p> <p>As I waited on the platform for my last train, the one that would at last give me safe passage to Berlin, an announcement was made over the loudspeakers. Not knowing a word of German, I didn&rsquo;t understand, but figured that whatever it was would show up on the boards if it was important. Well, it didn&rsquo;t.
