Good and bad drawings

For myself it’s a fact that some people can draw well and some simply cannot. ‘People’ meaning adults who have been drawing long enough to know the difference.

So what makes a good drawing?

A good drawing shows skill, quality, originality and has meaningful content. A degree of overlap existing between these.

When we talk about skill in drawing this is always a bone of contention and as far as I’m concerned you cannot be creative if you don’t have the skills to be creative with in the first place. Certainly skills can be learnt up to a point but talent also plays a huge part.
Quality is the excellent use of the materials, for example… a good quality line can easily be differentiated from a poor quality line.
Originality means that the drawing is unique and that it is inspirational and it’s not copied and it’s not ‘lacking’ that necessary edge.
Meaningful content is when the drawing has some idea or concept behind it which is meaningful. Meaning can also be found once the drawing is completed, it doesn’t necessarily need to precede the act of drawing.

If any one of these four main ingredients of excellent drawing are missing the drawing simply isn’t excellent.
