The Great Racial Opt Out

Writing about race in the United States is risky because no matter what one writes, someone will take offense over it. Hence, it has become the forbidden subject of discourse between people of different races. One may feel free, or freer, to say what you feel amongst people of your own race (especially if they share your views) but learn to be very discreet in those increasingly rare instances where there are open interracial discussions. The sad reality is that few are interested in learning. Instead, people tend to preach to people who don’t want to hear what they have to say.

Racial issues have been pushed to the backburner in large parts of white America as people have simply opted out on the issue. They are bored by it, just don’t want to hear about it, and go about their lives as if the issues do not exist.
