Assembly Theory in Organisational Design – a new paradigm?

Enterprises are just like Bacteria. Not in their ability to cause mass societal harm, but in how they function. Their constituent parts may differ (proteins vs MS Teams) but they are both composed of a range of different components interacting together in defined ways. They are both systems engaged in the pursuit of resources, survival and success.

Bacteria and Enterprises are also both a product of evolution*. Enterprises evolve to take advantage of a niche, and if competition arises and they can’t adapt, they fail. The components of an enterprise (tools, methodologies etc.) also evolve to fill a niche. If a better variant comes along, those components will also cease to exist. Just like Red Squirrels disappearing in favour of Grey Squirrels, we can see Blockbuster being outcompeted by Netflix. Just like the Dodo, Waterfall is no longer.

Website
