Bits & Bytes — Apple Silicon versus Intel: Application Memory Usage Shootout

Since the launch of Apple Silicon, it has been claimed that Apple’s System on a Chip (SOC), in combination with macOS, handles RAM more efficiently than Intel’s CPUs. According to several reports in the press, Apple’s MacBook is said to be capable of operating much more efficiently with 8GB of RAM than its Intel-based counterparts.

But is this really the case?
Beyond the fact that the operating system itself should consume less RAM, it must also imply that individual programs do the same.

We have examined a selection of software available in both macOS and Windows versions, to verify this claim. Some of these programs also exist in Linux and BSD versions, which we may revisit in a later article.
