Antonio Gaudí: Influence of Radical Barcelona on Means of Creating Architecture

<p>Gaud&iacute; began his architectural career in 1883, a time when Barcelona was beginning to see extreme conflict, instability, and chaos. Social unrest and labor disputes between the upper and lower classes were on the rise, as the bourgeoisie opposed any labor reform that diminished profits. Movements that hinged on instability such as the anarchist and communist movements had fully established in the city. Murders, arrests, and executions were at all-time highs while the social climate grew much tenser. On top of that, the deep history and culture of the Catalonian area, the place in which Barcelona is situated, called for independence and self-rule from the rest of Spain, beginning a long revolutionary war. In Barcelona, it was impossible to escape the chaos, even within the arts, there was conflict between the liberal, non-religious, and experimental Modernista movement and conservative and traditional, Noucentista movement. But, instead of embracing a radical point of view and joining the chaos, the city influenced Gaud&iacute; to choose to differentiate himself by being a centrist. He was able to identify that the city was in dire need of unification and expressed his opinions of modernism, and experimentation to a city of extreme radicals by making his art appeal to everyone.
