Alice Osman’s LOVELESS Disappointed Me

Alice Osman is an English author, illustrator and screenwriter and is mostly famous for her queer series ‘Heartstopper’. Her novels usually contain queer characters, and her beautiful style of writing and unique plot has made her one of the most popular modern queer writers.

I have read many queer books in my life and honestly, most of them I found to follow a cliche that I believe is a very common experience of queer people discovering their sexuality and then fighting the world with or for their significant other, the battle for acceptance and all that. I am in no way saying that experiences like these that are very common for most queer people should not be told. But I do believe that this has become a type of cliche in the queer book market. It limits the reach of the book also as a novel with such plot would be hardly relatable for somebody who is not queer. It is true that the target audience of a queer book is the queer community. But if the objective is to normalize queerness, then queer characters cannot be limited to queer stories and queer stories cannot be written solely for queer people.
