An analysis of Alex Dang’s poem “What kind of Asian are you?”

The poem refers to the toil of second-generation Asian American immigrants and how they deal with stereotypes, micro-aggressions, marginalization, and systematic racism.

The line ‘what kind of Asian are you?’ diminishes people into objects in the eyes of a majority populace. It distributes people into groups by being concerned by their outward appearance.

The line ‘you want me to drive, how so?’ shows the willingness to conform to the majority group’s expectations as not to be ostracized from a group. The poet doesn’t defend himself from the dig at the stereotype of Asians being bad drivers.
