Alameda Beach Clean-Up

On Wednesday, September 6th, students from 2nd period Faith, Culture, and Justice walked to Crown Memorial Beach instead of class from 10:15 AM to 12:15 AM. This cleanup aims to leave the beach a better place and build community through service work.

Unfortunately, in the Bay Area, littering is common, especially in parks or beaches. It has become such an epidemic that our prettiest beaches/waterfronts are littered with garbage. Not only is this unappealing to the human eyes, but it’s also very harmful to the animals and the overall environment that we live in.

This is also one of the reasons why fishing is so uncommon in Alameda. We need to do better and do our part in keeping our beaches and parks clean, picking up any trash that we see, and making sure that we inform other people on this issue as well. One of the big reasons why we are doing this as a class is to build community, and what better way to do that, than helping the area around us, and maybe even helping develop ourselves as people?

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found that our beaches have become more and more desolate, with people either not wanting to bring their children or friends to filthy beaches. Mites, swimmer’s itch, algal blooms, garbage and other things tarnish our beaches. Not to mention the fact that these beaches don’t even connect to the ocean.

Though the beaches in the Bay Area tend not to have a good reputation, the Bay Area ranked among some of the best beaches in California. In an article published June 30, 2023 by NBC Bay Area, it was stated that “Alameda and Contra Costa counties had 100% of its beaches scoring an A or B throughout the year, numbers that are significantly higher than its five-year average.”

Website
