Enabling is an abusive word these days.

People who have loved ones that suffer from problematic drug use are in enough pain as it is. They don’t need an armchair parent or friend sitting on the sidelines warning them against the evils of enabling. Don’t get me wrong. I believe in having healthy boundaries and protecting ourselves when it comes to dealing with our loved ones who are suffering with problematic drug use, but I don’t believe in cutting them off completely and I don’t believe in shaming the parents of the addicted because they’re trying their best to navigate a very dark & hard situation. A part of the problem is that when something works for us we tend to preach from the mountain tops that our way is “The Way”, “After all, this path worked for me!”
