What is abiogenesis?

The concept of abiogenesis, or the natural process by which life originates from non-living matter, has been a subject of extensive exploration in biology. Rooted in the Greek words ἀ- (a-) meaning ‘not,’ βῐ́ος (bios) meaning ‘life,’ and γένεσις (genesis) meaning ‘origin,’ it encompasses the hypothesis that life on Earth did not emerge in a single event but rather through a complex process.

This process involves the transformation from non-living to living entities, incorporating elements such as the formation of a habitable planet, prebiotic synthesis of organic molecules, molecular self-replication, self-assembly, autocatalysis, and the emergence of cell membranes. Notably, the shift from non-life to life has not been observed experimentally, adding an element of mystery to the study.
