A tale of two livers

TL;DR my friend needed a liver, I happen to have a healthy one. Sharing our story to raise awareness of the importance of organ and tissue donation.

This is the first of a two-part story on being a living liver donor. You can read both, or individually as a standalone. The second article “The scars you love”, is about the essential life skills and spiritual learning that the entire donation experience cultivated in me.

My storytelling is in a loose chronological order, and I write about emotions, interactions and inner work that unfolded over months, instead of single events stitched over time.

On-going gratitude and praise

The Liver Sisters and the Roberts

Starting with the deepest gratitude and praise to our husbands, The Roberts; we couldn’t have done this without them. Our husbands do have the same first name; mine’s a full Robert, Louisa’s goes by Rob. Between the four of us, we sound like a lounge act.

The first person I consulted on the liver donation was my handsome-and-talented husband Robert, although deep down, we both knew my decision had been made. I am truly grateful that he not only respected my decision, he fully supported me, Louisa and Rob all the way.

From singlehandedly taking care of our pup Alfa and walking her 4x a day for weeks, to daily driving to Uniklinikum Jena from their Airbnb in Weimar after work for hospital visits, to bringing me food in the hospital (anyone who has eaten hospital food can relate). Once I was discharged from hospital, Robert continued driving Rob to the hospital daily after work so that Rob could see Louisa.

My handsome-and-talented husband remained unblinkingly steadfast throughout every ordeal. He says he was steadfast because I was so fearless, and I say I’m only fearless because he’s so solid. If I doubted it before, now after our journey together, I understand that he and I were made of similar materials and ingredients.
