A September Heatwave?

It’s now September which heralds the start of meteorological autumn in Britain. I have fond memories of autumns past with their fallen crispy leaves and cool breezes. After a summer of mixed hot and wet weather, I’ve been craving a typical British autumn.

Sadly, climate change really spins things on their heads.

Unfortunately, just as I have started back at work, a 31 degree heatwave has encompassed the UK. The weather presenter tonight said that average September temperatures are 19 degrees C at this time of year and yet we are being stifled by a sticky extreme heat that is keeping autumn very much at bay.

Why Does It Matter?

Right now is harvest time, when crops can be negatively affected by a sudden drought and increased temperatures. Similarly, trees are acting confused by extended summer warmth. Animals are muddled by distorted seasons which can influence their migration and hibernation patterns.

Some are complaining that summer has come late but the reality is that our seasons are merging. At this rate we will just have a wet/ hot summer and a cool/ wet winter.

Final Thoughts

I worry that we are losing our scenic snowy winters and beautiful autumns. Climate change is real and devastating and we definitely need to take notice of what it is doing to our world.

Hopefully, eventually governments will take big decisions to eliminate fossil fuels and begin to undo the damage done by decades of pollution and deforestation.

A hot month of September may seem brilliant to a few people but it concerns me greatly.

Have you noticed a change in seasons where you are?
