In addition to being the third most spoken language in the world, with over 600 million speakers, according to Ethnologue, Modern Standard Hindi (?????????????????? ???????????? ??????????????????) is a language that is also much discussed by Hindi scholars. I am interested in two Hindi scholars, in particular: Nityananda Mishra and Rupert Snell.
Mishra is an Indian who writes books, makes podcasts on YouTube about Hindi, and generally is a Pure Hindi (??????????????? ???????????????) advocate — Pure Hindi is devoid of foreign loanwords from English, Persian, and Arabic. Snell is English, decries the influence of English on Hindi, and promotes Sanskritic and Persianate Hindi. I am fortunate to have had the honor, and privilege, of learning Hindi from him at The University of Texas at Austin, which has the preeminent Hindi-Urdu department in the country as the national flagship.
