One Human???s Hobby is Another Human???s Job

On several occasions I have paid money for the experience of picking my own fruits and vegetables on a farm. Every time, my brain is tickled by the palpable economic plot twist. Seeing a whole crowd of people lined up, willing to pay money for the opportunity to contribute their own labor to a farm, makes the assumption of perfectly rational humans in economics class seem silly.

On at least one occasion, there were farm workers in the next field being paid to do the same activity we were paying to do on this side of the fence. We’re leisurely foraging and calling it a vacation. They’re sweating profusely and calling it a hard day’s work. But we’re both effectively just gardening. The difference was how much we wanted to do it versus how much we have to do it.
