Have you ever heard something so astonishing that you nearly stopped your car in the middle of the street to gawk?
I kept my eyes on the road, my attention firmly forward, and tried to process what my passenger had just said. I had been commenting on my most recent trip south, talking about how Trumpism is a serious threat to democracy when my companion brought me up short.
“Immigration ruined the economy up here. Y’know, I’m not usually against it, but we’ve taken in too many people…”
I had to take a deep breath to keep my tone from turning coldly sarcastic. Not that I want to be rude to my friend, of course, I don’t. But I’ve heard this nonsensical claim before, and I have no patience left for it.
