Shayn Proler’s career with the Houston Fire Department began with dedication and enthusiasm. He joined as a firefighter, embracing the challenging and often perilous responsibilities that came with the job. However, Proler had a unique vulnerability — a deep-seated fear of fire.
This phobia, a condition known as pyrophobia, gradually began to affect his ability to carry out his duties. The fear of fire, which is a firefighter’s fundamental adversary, presented a significant hurdle in his daily work life. It impaired his performance and, in his eyes, constituted a disability that required accommodation.
