Are We Blank Slates Like John Locke Suggests?

Sitting cross-legged on the newly polished parquet floor, we waited for the words our headmaster said at every school assembly:

“Children. Imagine today is a blank slate.”

I thought about it.

What did he mean by today was a blank slate?

I pictured the grey slate Mom used to build the fireplace in our living room.

Today’s a blank slate…

Then, I imagined the nearby slate quarry. It was a messy monster bite out of the cliff.
