Carlos Camacho was a prominent figure in Guam’s political scene, serving as the territory’s governor from 1963 to 1969. Born on March 14, 1924, in Hagåtña, Guam, Camacho was the son of a prominent businessman and politician, Manuel Flores Camacho, who served as Guam’s first civilian governor under American administration from 1949 to 1953.

Camacho began his career in politics as a senator in the Guam Legislature, where he served from 1951 to 1956. During this time, he gained a reputation as a skilled orator and advocate for Guam’s political rights. He was a staunch supporter of the island’s quest for self-determination, which had been a longstanding issue since Guam’s annexation by the United States in 1898.
