<p>Thomas Midgley was a mechanical and chemical engineer, born in 1889 in Pennsylvania. A few years after graduating from Cornell University in 1911, he began working for General Motors. After 5 years of work, he came up with an absolutely ingenious invention. Internal combustion engines can have a problem called &ldquo;knocking,&rdquo; where the combustion of the fuel-air mixture does not occur at the right point in the cylinder. This can lead to serious problems within the engine.
