<p>Thomas Midgley was a mechanical and chemical engineer, born in 1889 in Pennsylvania. A few years after graduating from Cornell University in 1911, he began working for General Motors. After 5 years of work, he came up with an absolutely ingenious invention. Internal combustion engines can have a problem called “knocking,” where the combustion of the fuel-air mixture does not occur at the right point in the cylinder. This can lead to serious problems within the engine. Thomas Midgley found a “fantastic” way to prevent this problem by adding lead to gasoline.</p>
