Modeling Games with Markov Chains

From playing cards with friends to winning money at the roulette table, the joy of a great game is irresistible to most. But no matter how fun, after a few losses even the most optimistic of players can’t help but ask “Is the game rigged?” For those of us with some knowledge of probability leaving this question unanswered can feel unsatisfying to say the least. In this post we will explore a type of probabilistic model for answering questions of this kind. Specifically, I will show how Markov Chains can be applied to the game “Shut the Box,” in hopes of inspiring you to use probability to answer your own game related questions.
