William Charles Akins was born in 1932 in Austin, Texas, a segregated city, with strict laws and customs that enforced racial segregation between white and black residents. His family faced significant discrimination, oppression, and limited opportunities compared to their white counterparts. Black individuals were often restricted to living in segregated neighborhoods, such as East Austin, and were denied access to many public facilities, including parks, schools, restaurants, and movie theaters. They also faced barriers to accessing quality healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.</p>
