Why I m Busy is the New I m Fine— And What s Wrong With That

<p>Remember when bumping into an acquaintance meant the almost robotic exchange of &ldquo;How are you?&rdquo; followed by the equally predictable &ldquo;I&rsquo;m fine&rdquo;?</p> <p>Well, times have changed, my friends. Now, it&rsquo;s not uncommon to hear, or perhaps proudly declare, &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been so,&nbsp;<em>so</em>&nbsp;busy!&rdquo;</p> <p>And just like that, &ldquo;busy&rdquo; has become the new &ldquo;fine&rdquo;, the modern-day badge of honour in the Olympics of Life.</p> <p>Yet, there&rsquo;s a subtle line between being genuinely swamped and the performative busyness we sometimes wear as a shield, protecting us from admitting that maybe, just maybe, we&rsquo;re not as productively busy as we&rsquo;d like to think.</p> <p>Which leads us to the real question&hellip;</p> <h1>Are we busy with intent, or just busy being busy?</h1> <p>Imagine you&rsquo;re just home from work, sinking into your favourite cozy chair with a hot drink. The day&rsquo;s cacophony is behind you. But as you reflect, a nagging question bubbles up: &ldquo;What on Earth did I actually get done today?&rdquo;</p> <p>Those three hours you spent deep-diving into your inbox? Surely, they weren&rsquo;t in vain. And those cat videos &mdash; the ones where Mr. Whiskers valiantly scales the refrigerator &mdash; were for, erm, &ldquo;cognitive relaxation.&rdquo;</p> <p>And let&rsquo;s not forget the 45 minutes you spent debating between spaghetti or stir-fry for dinner. Critical decisions, people!</p> <p>We&rsquo;ve all had those days dominated by distractions.
