I love people who doubt

I was born in 1978. As many kids from my generation growing up in France, I use to listen to Anne Sylvestre. I knew her for her “Fabulettes”, short fictional stories for kids, and for a character named Little Josette, which I liked very much, for she was a smart and playful kid and -just like me- a girl. I realised only years later that Anne Sylvestre was feminist, an engagement that one can hear across her whole discography, in the albums she made for adults as well as in her children’s song. Little Josette was feminist, and so was I, already.

Anne Sylvestre died on November 2020. Since then I have been (re)discovering her songs. Amongst which a famous one that I love. In French “Les gens qui doutent” translate in English as “People who doubt”. As one of them, a person who doubt myself, those words are comforting, reassuring, validating even. I like to listen to it 3 or 4 times in a row. I’d like to learn it by heart. And I came to want to share it with the world -that is, in English.
