What’s the Difference Between Research and Data Science?

When I first ventured out of academic labs and into the software world, I encountered my first data scientist out in the wild, and to say the least: I was confused. They may as well been an alien.

Who are you?

What are you doing here?

Who is your leader?

I spent the better half of my professional life in academic labs at some really great schools. From undergrad, to PhD, to post-doc, to government research, I was basically a full blown research scientist. If you had cut me, I’d bleed the scientific method.

And then, well, pretty much over night I hopped the fence and became a co-founder of what eventually became a VC funded software company in the cloud data space. Through that experience, I had to grow up quickly and learn all about the modern world. I hate to admit it, but academia is really behind the times.
