The Weird Ethics of AI-Generated Vocals
<p>A song featuring <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/19/arts/music/ai-drake-the-weeknd-fake.html" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">AI-generated Drake and The Weeknd</a> vocals went viral before being taken down by streaming services. A spokesperson for Universal Music Group — who denounce AI music — said in a statement to <a href="https://www.musicbusinessworldwide.com/universal-music-group-responds-to-fake-drake-ai-track-streaming-platforms-have-a-fundamental-responsibility/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Music Business Worldwide</a>, “The training of generative AI using our artists’ music […] begs the question as to which side of history all stakeholders in the music ecosystem want to be on: <em>the side of artists, fans and human creative expression, or on the side of deep fakes, fraud and denying artists their due compensation</em>.” (Emphasis mine.)</p>

After watching songs featuring her AI-generated vocals become more popular than her previous songs, she said that no human artist could compete with AI. “How do you fight with someone who is putting out new albums in the time span of minutes?”</p>
<p>Paul McCartney resurrected his former bandmate’s voice, as AI has made it possible to create one last Beatles record using the <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/13/23759296/the-beatles-now-and-then-restoration-ai-paul-mccartney-john-lennon" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">now-deceased John Lennon’s vocals</a>. An article from <em>The Verge</em> wrote, “Although excited at the possibility of using AI to restore old recordings, McCartney said that it’s ‘kind of scary’ to hear John Lennon’s voice singing one of his songs.”</p>
