Not again. When my real name is not valid for web forms

This was not the first time that my name was not “valid” and I was not able to complete a web form without using, for example, my partner’s name. My guess is that the programmer who built this form decided that last names need to be >2 characters long. In fact, many Chinese last names are 2 characters long, like my own one.

This instance is just one of the many cultural biases in tech that I experienced. Some are more subtle. Ample resume studies identified high ethnic discrimination in recruitment, most notably, against the name itself. This is partially why, many overseas Chinese choose to ‘whiten’ their names hoping to be exempt from ethical discrimination in the workplace.
