The Gun Violence Epidemic: How will we make our schools and our country safer?

In March of 2019, my friends and I were in Miami Beach for spring break. In broad daylight, one of my friends was sexually harassed and physically assaulted by an intoxicated male spring breaker. It happened so fast that we did not capture the incident on video or even get a good description of the perpetrator. As soon as my other friends and I saw what was happening, we immediately ran to the closest police officer for help and to report the incident. The police officer’s first response was to make light of our claim and suggest “If you had a gun, he wouldn’t have gotten away.” We were all shocked that this was his reaction. He told us that girls come up to him every day after being assaulted and that there is “nothing he can do about it,” because reports rarely turn into cases if you don’t have the name and photo/video evidence of the perpetrator.
