Case Study: AR interfaces for automated vehicle-pedestrian interactions

In my last article I had highlighted the outcomes of an interview I conducted with experts on the future urban environment. More specifically, about the introduction of self-driving vehicles in everyday traffic, and the how these driverless robots will communicate with the other road users, specifically the pedestrian.

My suggested solution to the problem, and the topic of my ongoing PhD research, was the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) interfaces which will enable transparent interactions between the car and the pedestrian. The assumption was of course, that our smartphones will gradually be replaced by spacial computing devices; an argument which I kept putting forward as academic and industrial research progressed, and as we waited for industry to disrupt the market. Now that the Apple moment has arrived, with the introduction of the Vision Pro spatial computing headset, and the subsequent industry response, the question is no longer if but when these headsets will leave the living room.
