A Vegetarian Takes Scotland

It comes as no surprise to anyone familiar with Scottish culture that the Scots love their meats. From blood pudding to Aberdeen angus to their beloved haggis, Scotland isn’t necessarily known for their vegetarian cuisine. My number one worry before I went abroad was essentially, as a vegetarian, what in the world am I going to eat during my four months in a carnivorous country? Am I just going to have to survive on overcooked potatoes and turnips? Will I be ridiculed by every Scottish waiter at every restaurant I visit for only ordering a salad? Although it might not seem like that big of a deal, any vegetarian understands the struggle of having to explain your dietary choices to strangers. Especially when you’re trying to make a good impression with the locals of your host country. With all of these panicked thoughts running through my head, I was relieved to discover that, although Scotland will never relinquish its love of all that is good and meaty, Edinburgh is a very vegetarian friendly city.
