Things I value in a Software Engineer

While it’s true that sharp technical skill is in high demand, there are other things that I appreciate which are in equally high demand. If you possess even half of these then consider yourself ahead of at least 80% of your peers. Feel free to add these to how you approach interviews!

1. You complete your work on time

The ultimate measure of your value is whether or not you can do your job. It all really comes down to this. Are you getting it done? Do I have to constantly check-in on you and ask why something isn’t finished yet?

Not a good look.

Completing your work will solve 99% of any problems that you may have.

2. You reach out when you need something, to who you need to reach out to

When you encounter an issue or get stuck, you reach out to the right person to unstick yourself. You don’t go idle until the next standup and lament at how you couldn’t get help or figure out how to move forward.
