My Unpopular Opinion About Populism

When hockey fans voted to include veteran goon John Scott in the 2016 NHL All-Star competition, no one could have been more surprised than Scott himself. In 286 career NHL games, he scored a measly five goals and six assists while racking up 544 penalty minutes. Those are not all-star numbers, and the league suits made it very clear how they felt about his selection. Surely, it must be a joke, right?</p>
<p>The All-Star game is supposed to be a showcase of skill and finesse, and while everyone understands the role enforcers play in real games, they didn’t belong among hockey’s best and brightest. In the end, though, the game is first and foremost about the fans, and after an initial effort to subvert the voting results, the league relented and allowed Scott to participate.</p>
