Why preserve ugly buildings?

First, a brief overview of the basic facts and current situation of Merihaka. It’s a residential area near the center of Helsinki, surrounded by the sea to the west and south. Merihaka was built between 1973 and 1986, and it’s one of two areas in Finland built according to the compact city model. However, Merihaka is more carefully positioned and detailed than the other area in Itä-Pasila. (Docomomo 2024) The location is ideal and housing is relatively affordable, but the modernist architecture is generally considered unpleasant, harsh and monotonous. However, the residents disagree with the general opinion. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community and appreciation for their home. Merihaka is not protected, but it has been included in Docomomo’s (International Committee for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement) list of modernist architecture since 2017.
